Abbreviations and informal tone
In German text messages, abbreviations and a casual tone are common:
Common abbreviations:
- LG = Liebe Grüße (kind regards)
- VG = Viele Grüße (many regards)
- HDL = Hab dich lieb (love you)
- GLG = Ganz liebe Grüße (warmest regards)
- WE = Wochenende (weekend)
- vllt = vielleicht (maybe)
- bzgl = bezüglich (regarding)
Informal tone: In messages, you can drop the subject pronoun:
- Bin gleich da. (instead of Ich bin gleich da.)
- Komme später. (instead of Ich komme später.)
The informal du is often used even in first digital contact:
- Hast du morgen Zeit? (Do you have time tomorrow?)
- Schreib mir! (Write to me!)
To send a message:
- Ich schicke dir eine Nachricht. (I will send you a message.)
- Schreib mir eine SMS. (Send me a text.)
