Understanding Emotions in French
The Subjunctive with Emotion Verbs
At B2 level, expressing emotions requires mastering the subjunctive mood after verbs and expressions of feeling.
Key pattern: emotion verb/expression + que + subjunctive
Je suis ravie qu'il puisse venir. — I'm delighted he can come.
Il est dommage que tu ne sois pas là. — It's a shame you're not there.
Ça m'étonne qu'elle ait réagi ainsi. — It surprises me that she reacted that way.
Common Emotion Triggers
- avoir peur que — to be afraid that: J'ai peur qu'il ne comprenne pas.
- être déçu que — to be disappointed that: Je suis déçu qu'elle soit partie.
- regretter que — to regret that: Je regrette que ce soit fini.
- se réjouir que — to be glad that: Je me réjouis qu'il ait réussi.
Nuancing Intensity
Use adverbs and structures to fine-tune emotional intensity:
- Slightly: un peu déçu, légèrement agacé
- Moderately: assez inquiet, plutôt content
- Strongly: profondément touché, extrêmement soulagé
- Overwhelmingly: complètement bouleversé, absolument ravi
The Expletive "ne"
In formal French, an expletive ne (no negative meaning) appears after fear expressions:
Je crains qu'il ne soit en retard. — I fear he may be late.
This ne does NOT negate — it's a stylistic marker of formal register.
