This lesson explores how to discuss cultural differences using comparisons and generalizations.
Comparing cultures uses plus… que, moins… que, aussi… que: En France, on mange plus tard qu'en Angleterre (In France, people eat later than in England).
Generalizing with on is very common: En France, on fait la bise (In France, people kiss on the cheek). The pronoun on here means "people in general."
Expressing surprise or contrast: Use par contre (on the other hand), en revanche (conversely), alors que (whereas): Aux États-Unis, on se serre la main, alors qu'en France, on fait la bise.
Softening generalizations: Add en général, souvent, d'habitude to avoid sounding too absolute: En général, les Français prennent le temps de manger.
Be careful not to reinforce stereotypes! Use nuance: Il paraît que… (It seems that…), On dit que… (They say that…).
