Using past tenses in arguments: When supporting your opinion with past examples, choose carefully:
- Passé composé for completed events: Les réseaux sociaux ont changé notre façon de communiquer.
- Imparfait for describing how things were: Avant, les gens se parlaient en face à face.
- Combined: Quand j'étais jeune, on n'avait pas de smartphone. Tout a changé en dix ans.
Depuis vs Il y a:
- Depuis = since / for (ongoing): Je suis sur Instagram depuis 2018. / Depuis trois ans, j'utilise moins les réseaux.
- Il y a = ago (completed): J'ai créé mon compte il y a cinq ans. / Il y a deux ans, j'ai supprimé Facebook.
Key difference: depuis implies the action continues; il y a marks a past point in time.
