अंग्रेज़ी में अपने रजिस्टर को संदर्भ के अनुसार ढालना C1 स्तर का एक मूलभूत कौशल है। एक ही संदेश को परिस्थिति के अनुसार बिल्कुल अलग ढंग से व्यक्त किया जा सकता है।

औपचारिक उलटाव

उन्नत स्तर पर परिष्कृत अंग्रेज़ी ज़ोर देने या भाषा को अधिक औपचारिक बनाने के लिए inversions का प्रयोग करती है:

• Rarely do we encounter such sophisticated discourse. (हम ऐसे परिष्कृत विमर्श से बहुत कम ही रूबरू होते हैं।)
• Not only did she present the data, but she also challenged the methodology. (उन्होंने न केवल आँकड़े प्रस्तुत किए, बल्कि कार्यप्रणाली पर भी प्रश्न उठाया।)
• Under no circumstances should the document be shared externally. (किसी भी परिस्थिति में दस्तावेज़ बाहरी लोगों के साथ साझा नहीं किया जाना चाहिए।)
• Seldom has the committee reached consensus so swiftly. (समिति इतनी शीघ्रता से सहमति पर बहुत कम ही पहुँची है।)

ये संरचनाएँ आधिकारिक भाषणों, अकादमिक लेखन और औपचारिक पत्राचार में मिलती हैं।

अनौपचारिक बनाम परिष्कृत रजिस्टर — तुलनात्मक उदाहरण

• अनौपचारिक: Can you help me out? → परिष्कृत: Would you be so kind as to assist me?
• अनौपचारिक: The plan failed. → परिष्कृत: The proposal proved ineffectual.
• अनौपचारिक: He is really good at his job. → परिष्कृत: He demonstrates exemplary professional competence.

आम उलझनें

प्रशासनिक रजिस्टर (फॉर्म, सरकारी कामकाज) कूटनीतिक रजिस्टर (बैठकें, वार्ताएँ) से बहुत अलग होता है। C1 स्तर का अंग्रेज़ी वक्ता इन उप-रजिस्टरों के बीच सहजता से आ-जा सकता है।

आम गलतियाँ — रजिस्टर और उलटाव

• Rarely we encounter this problem. → Rarely do we encounter this problem.

वाक्य की शुरुआत में negative adverb (rarely, never, seldom) हो तो संरचना उलटी होती है: auxiliary + subject।

• He is very formal in all contexts. → He adapts his register to each context.

C1 स्तर का वक्ता एक ही रजिस्टर में स्थिर नहीं रहता; वह परिस्थिति के अनुसार अपनी भाषा ढालता है।

• The report is very good. → The report is commendable / exemplary / meticulously argued.

"Very good" उन्नत पेशेवर या अकादमिक संदर्भ के लिए बहुत अस्पष्ट और अपेक्षाकृत अनौपचारिक है।

• Not only she presented the data but challenged the method. → Not only did she present the data, but she also challenged the method.

उपवाक्य के आरंभ में "not only" आने पर auxiliary–subject inversion अनिवार्य है।

• This language is appropriated for academic contexts. → This language is appropriate for academic contexts.

"Appropriated" का अर्थ किसी चीज़ को अपने कब्ज़े में लेना भी हो सकता है; यहाँ अपेक्षित विशेषण "appropriate" है।
