Film Criticism in Dutch

Relative clauses with wat and hetgeen are key for expressing opinions about films.

Wat replaces a whole clause or an indefinite antecedent: De film was geweldig, wat me verraste. (The film was great, which surprised me.) Alles wat hij zei was overtuigend. (Everything he said was convincing.)

Hetgeen is more formal than wat: De regisseur maakte onverwachte keuzes, hetgeen de film versterkte. (The director made unexpected choices, which strengthened the film.)

For non-restrictive relative clauses (with comma), use die/dat: De acteur, die al drie prijzen heeft gewonnen, speelt de hoofdrol. (The actor, who has already won three prizes, plays the lead.)

Adjective use for reviews: een ontroerend verhaal (a moving story), een meeslepende vertolking (a gripping performance), visueel verbluffend (visually stunning).

Common review phrases: Het valt op dat... (It stands out that...), Wat opvalt is... (What stands out is...), De film laat te wensen over (The film leaves something to be desired).

वाक्यांश

  • Wat opvalt is de cinematografieWhat stands out is the cinematography
  • De film, die vorig jaar uitkwam...The film, which came out last year...
  • Het valt op dat de vertolking sterk isIt is notable that the performance is strong
  • Alles wat de regisseur aanraakt...Everything the director touches...
  • De film laat te wensen overThe film leaves something to be desired
  • Een visueel verbluffend meesterwerkA visually stunning masterpiece

आम गलतियाँ

  • De film was geweldig, die me verraste
De film was geweldig, wat me verraste

When referring to a whole clause (not a specific noun), use wat, not die.

  • Alles die hij zei was overtuigend
Alles wat hij zei was overtuigend

After alles, iets, niets, use wat as the relative pronoun, not die.

  • De acteur, wat drie prijzen won...
De acteur, die drie prijzen won...

For specific nouns (persons), use die (not wat). Wat is for whole clauses.

  • Het is een ontroerende verhaal
    Het is een ontroerend verhaal

Verhaal is a het-word, so the adjective after een stays uninflected: ontroerend.

  • De film valt op dat...
    Het valt op dat...

The impersonal construction requires het as subject, not de film.
