Managing Conflict in Dutch

Expressing regret and wishes about the past is essential for conflict resolution. Dutch uses specific structures for this.

Had ik maar... (If only I had...): Had ik maar beter geluisterd! (If only I had listened better!) This expresses regret about a past action. The word order is inverted: auxiliary + subject + maar.

Was het maar zo dat... (If only it were the case that...): Was het maar zo dat we het konden terugdraaien. (If only we could undo it.) This expresses an unrealistic wish.

Ik wou dat... (I wish that...): Ik wou dat ik het niet had gezegd. (I wish I hadn't said it.) Note: wou is the past tense of willen used in wishes, followed by a verb-final clause.

For apologizing: Het spijt me dat... (I'm sorry that...), Ik had dat niet moeten zeggen (I shouldn't have said that).

For de-escalation: Laten we er rustig over praten (Let's talk about it calmly), Ik begrijp hoe je je voelt (I understand how you feel).

The key pattern is: past subjunctive structures use had + past participle for regrets, and was/were for unrealistic present wishes.
