Separable Verbs in Sentences
Word order in main clauses
In a main clause, the separable prefix moves to the end:
- opruimen: Ik ruim mijn bureau op (I tidy my desk)
- uitleggen: De baas legt het project uit (The boss explains the project)
- afsluiten: Zij sluit de deur af (She locks the door)
Word order in questions
In yes/no questions, the verb comes first but the prefix still goes to the end:
- Ruim je je bureau op? (Do you tidy your desk?)
- Kom je morgen aan? (Do you arrive tomorrow?)
With modal verbs
When used with a modal verb (kunnen, moeten, willen), the separable verb stays together as an infinitive at the end:
- Ik moet mijn bureau opruimen (I must tidy my desk)
- Kun je dat uitleggen? (Can you explain that?)
Example: "Ik kom om negen uur aan op kantoor. Eerst ruim ik mijn bureau op, daarna begin ik te werken."
