Conjugation of kunnen
- ik kan, jij kan/kunt, hij/zij kan, wij kunnen, jullie kunnen, zij kunnen
Using kunnen + infinitive
The infinitive goes to the end:
- Ik kan zwemmen → I can swim
- Zij kan goed voetballen → She can play football well
- Kun je schaatsen? → Can you ice skate?
Negative: niet kunnen
- Ik kan niet tennissen → I cannot play tennis
- Hij kan niet goed hardlopen → He cannot run well
Sports in Dutch
Unlike English, Dutch often makes one word for sports:
- voetbal + len = voetballen (to play football)
- tennis + sen = tennissen (to play tennis)
- schaats + en = schaatsen (to ice skate)
Talking about sports
- Ik doe aan sport → I do sports
- Welke sport doe je? → Which sport do you do?
- Ik train twee keer per week → I train twice a week
Example: "Ik kan goed zwemmen, maar ik kan niet schaatsen. Ik voetbal elke zaterdag met mijn team."
