Question words

Dutch question words often start with w:

Wat → What (Wat is je naam?)
Wie → Who (Wie is dat?)

The verb "heten" (to be called)

ik heet → I am called
jij heet → you are called
hij/zij heet → he/she is called

Tip: Dutch uses "heten" (to be called) more than "zijn" (to be) for names. Say "Ik heet Anna" rather than "Ik ben Anna" — both work, but "heten" is more natural.

While not grammatically wrong, Dutch people naturally say "Hoe heet je?" (How are you called?) rather than "Wat is je naam?".

"Heten" means to be called (for names). For origin, use "komen uit" (to come from).
~~Mijn naam ben Anna~~
Mijn naam is Anna
"Naam" (name) is third person, so it takes "is", not "ben". "Ben" is only for "ik".
~~Hij heten Jan~~
Hij heet Jan
The verb "heten" conjugates to "heet" for hij/zij. Don't use the infinitive form.

Ik kom uit Nederland
For countries, use "uit" (from/out of), not "van". "Van" is for other contexts.
