Modal verbs: 会, 能, 可以
These three modals all translate as "can" but have distinct meanings.
会 (huì) — learned / acquired ability
- 我会说中文。(Wǒ huì shuō Zhōngwén.) — I can speak Chinese. (I learned it.)
- 她会开车。(Tā huì kāi chē.) — She can drive. (She knows how.)
能 (néng) — physical / circumstantial ability
- 我今天能来面试。(Wǒ jīntiān néng lái miànshì.) — I can come to the interview today.
- 你能搬这个箱子吗？(Nǐ néng bān zhège xiāngzi ma?) — Can you carry this box?
可以 (kěyǐ) — permission / possibility
- 我可以问一个问题吗？(Wǒ kěyǐ wèn yī ge wèntí ma?) — May I ask a question?
- 你可以明天来。(Nǐ kěyǐ míngtiān lái.) — You can come tomorrow. (It is OK.)
