To narrate a past event like a news story, you combine the pretérito imperfecto (background, context) and the pretérito indefinido (sudden action):
- Imperfecto: describes what was happening → estaba, caminaban, llovía
- Indefinido: tells what suddenly happened → ocurrió, llegó, chocó
Estaba caminando por la calle cuando ocurrió el accidente.
(I was walking down the street when the accident happened.)
Los bomberos estaban trabajando mientras la policía investigaba.
(The firefighters were working while the police were investigating.)
Key markers:
- cuando (when) — interruption: imperfecto + cuando + indefinido
- mientras (while) — two simultaneous actions: imperfecto + mientras + imperfecto
Mientras dormían, un terremoto sacudió la ciudad.
(While they were sleeping, an earthquake shook the city.)
