Citar fuentes en inglés académico
Citar bien las fuentes es una obligación ética y académica fundamental. En las publicaciones anglosajonas dominan dos sistemas de citación:
APA (American Psychological Association) — se usa en psicología, ciencias sociales y educación:
- En el texto: (Smith, 2021, p. 45) o bien Smith (2021) argues that...
- En la bibliografía: Smith, J. (2021). Title of work. Publisher.
MLA (Modern Language Association) — se usa en literatura, arte y humanidades:
- En el texto: (Smith 45) o bien Smith argues that...
- En la bibliografía: Smith, John. Title of Work. Publisher, 2021.
Fórmulas para atribuir ideas
Para integrar una cita o una idea ajena con elegancia:
"As Smith (2021) argues, "..." — the implication being that..." → "Como sostiene Smith (2021), «...», lo que implica que..."
"According to recent scholarship (Jones, 2020), the evidence suggests..." → "Según estudios recientes (Jones, 2020), la evidencia sugiere..."
"A landmark study conducted by Chen et al. (2019) demonstrated that..." → "Un estudio de referencia realizado por Chen et al. (2019) demostró que..."
"This view is corroborated by the findings of López and Martin (2022), who..." → "Esta postura queda corroborada por los hallazgos de López y Martin (2022), quienes..."
"Contrary to conventional wisdom, Kim (2023) contends that..." → "En contra de la opinión generalizada, Kim (2023) sostiene que..."
Expresiones
- As X argues...Para introducir una idea atribuida a un autor.
- According to Y (year)...Para citar una fuente con su año de publicación.
- This is supported by...Para respaldar un argumento con otra fuente.
- Contrary to what X claims...Para rebatir la idea de un autor citado.
- A growing body of evidence suggests...Para referirte a un conjunto de estudios.
- Scholars have long debated...Para situar un tema en un debate académico.
- The seminal work of X established...Para citar un estudio fundacional en un campo.
- As corroborated by recent findings...Para reforzar un argumento con datos recientes.
Errores frecuentes
As Smith (2019) says that the results are significant.As Smith (2019) argues, the results are significant. / Smith (2019) argues that the results are significant.«As» ya introduce la atribución, así que no se puede combinar con «says that»: hay que elegir una sola estructura.
As it is cited in the work of Brown...As Brown demonstrates... / Brown shows that...La construcción pasiva impersonal «as it is cited» resulta forzada; mejor un verbo activo, como «Brown demonstrates».
Many researchers believe that climate change is real.A growing body of researchers maintains that... / Research consistently indicates that...«Many researchers» es vago; el registro académico exige cuantificadores o fórmulas más precisas.
This idea comes from Jones et al (2020).This idea is drawn from Jones et al. (2020). / This concept originates in Jones et al. (2020).«Comes from» es demasiado coloquial para un texto académico; se prefieren verbos como «is drawn from» u «originates in».
The author references to the 2019 study.The author references the 2019 study.El verbo «reference» es transitivo directo en inglés: no lleva preposición «to» detrás.
According to Smith, he argues that the results are valid.Smith argues that the results are valid.«According to X» y «X argues» son redundantes juntos: hay que elegir una sola de las dos construcciones.
