El futuro en inglés: will vs going to

Para organizar un viaje por carretera necesitas hablar de tus planes y decisiones. El inglés tiene dos formas principales para el futuro.

Going to — planes decididos de antemano

be + going to + infinitivo

Usa going to cuando ya has decidido hacer algo:

  • We are going to visit the Scottish Highlands. → Vamos a visitar las Tierras Altas escocesas.
  • She is going to book the campsites in advance. → Ella va a reservar los campings con antelación.
  • I am going to drive the first leg. → Yo voy a conducir el primer tramo.

Will — decisiones espontáneas y promesas

will + infinitivo

Usa will para una decisión que tomas en el momento de hablar, o para una promesa:

  • "We need fuel." — "I'll stop at the next service station." (decisión espontánea)
  • I'll help you plan the route. (promesa)
  • Don't worry — it will be an amazing trip! (predicción general)

Predicciones: going to frente a will

  • Going to = hay una prueba visible, una evidencia: Look at the map — we're going to get lost!
  • Will = opinión o convicción personal: I think it will be the best trip of our lives.

Ejemplos concretos

  • We're going to take the scenic route through Wales.
  • If we get tired, we'll stop at a service station.
  • I'm going to plan the itinerary tonight.
  • I think it'll take about five hours to reach the destination.

Errores frecuentes

  • We will visit Edinburgh next week — we booked everything.
We are going to visit Edinburgh next week.

Cuando el plan ya está decidido y organizado se usa going to, no will.

  • I am going to help you — what do you need?
I will help you — what do you need?

Para una oferta o decisión espontánea en el momento de hablar se usa will, no going to.

  • It going to rain — look at the clouds.
It is going to rain — look at those clouds.

Going to siempre debe ir precedido del verbo to be bien conjugado (is/am/are).

  • I think we going to stop in Glasgow.
I think we are going to stop in Glasgow.

El verbo be es obligatorio en la estructura be going to; no se puede omitir.

  • We will to drive to the coast
We will drive to the coast

No se pone to entre will y el verbo: will drive, no will to drive.

  • The travel takes 3 hours
    The journey takes 3 hours

Journey se usa para un trayecto concreto; travel es un concepto general, no un trayecto.
