Narrative perspectives in German

German-language literature distinguishes several Erzählperspektiven (narrative perspectives) essential for literary analysis.

The omniscient narrator (auktorialer Erzähler):

  • Knows everything, comments on actions, and enters every character's thoughts.
  • *Thomas Mann* frequently uses this in *Buddenbrooks*.

First-person narration (Ich-Erzählung):

  • *Ich wusste nicht, was mich erwartete.* → I did not know what awaited me.
  • Typical in *Max Frisch* (*Homo faber*).

The unreliable narrator (unzuverlässiger Erzähler):

  • The reader cannot trust the account. The gap between what the narrator says and reality creates literary tension.

Interior monologue (innerer Monolog):

  • *Schnitzler* is a master with *Fräulein Else* — the reader follows the character's thoughts directly without narrative filter.

Identifying the perspective is the first step in any in-depth literary analysis.
