Code-Switching in Spanish
Code-switching is the practice of alternating between registers or languages within a single conversation.
The Spanglish Phenomenon
- English-Spanish mixing is very common in the US and border areas
- Examples: "Voy a parquear el carro" (parquear = to park, from English)
- Spanglish is not an error but a legitimate sociolinguistic phenomenon
Calques and Borrowings
- Préstamo: word borrowed directly ("fútbol", "marketing")
- Calco: literal translation of a foreign structure ("llamar para atrás" from "call back")
- Barbarismo: incorrect use of a foreign word that has not been adapted
Formal/Informal Register Markers
- Switching from "usted" to "tú" depending on context
- Alternating between technical and colloquial vocabulary
- The C2 speaker knows how to adapt register instantly
Sociolects and Idiolects
- Sociolecto: variety linked to a social group (youth, doctors, lawyers)
- Idiolecto: each individual's unique way of speaking
- Muletilla: unconsciously repeated word or expression ("o sea", "bueno", "pues")
表达
- O seaI mean, that is (very common filler)
- Es que...The thing is... (informal justification)
- ¿Me explico?Am I making myself clear?
- Llamar para atrásTo call back (English calque)
- Hacer clicTo click (adapted borrowing)
- En plan...Like... (youth filler, Spain)
- Tipo...Like, sort of... (Latin America)
- A ver...Let's see... (transition marker)
