- Imperfect (caminaba) for the backdrop
- Preterite (sonó) for the sudden action
- Creating suspense:
Lo que no sabía era que... (What he did not know was that...)
En ese preciso momento... (At that very moment...)
- Rhythm: Short sentences for tension, long sentences for description.
Se detuvo. Miró a su alrededor. Nada. (He stopped. He looked around. Nothing.)
- The twist:
Pero todo cambió cuando... (But everything changed when...)
