Academic Language and Hedging
In academic Spanish writing, hedging expresses ideas with caution and nuance.
- Hedging verbs: They soften statements.
Se podría argumentar que... (One could argue that...)
Esto sugiere que... (This suggests that...)
Los resultados parecen indicar... (The results seem to indicate...)
- Cautious adverbs:
Probablemente, posiblemente, aparentemente (Probably, possibly, apparently)
En cierta medida... (To a certain extent...)
- Impersonal structures:
Se ha observado que... (It has been observed that...)
Conviene señalar que... (It is worth noting that...)
- Why hedge? It shows awareness of the limits of one's claims. It is a mark of intellectual rigor, not weakness.
