Russian Idioms: Origins and Usage
Russian idioms (фразеологизмы) are deeply rooted in folk culture, history, and everyday life. Understanding their origins helps you remember and use them correctly.
Categories of Russian Idioms
- Body-based idioms: держать нос по ветру (hold nose into wind = be opportunistic), рубить с плеча (chop from shoulder = act rashly), водить за нос (lead by the nose = deceive)
- Work and laziness: бить баклуши (hit wooden blanks = do nothing useful), работать спустя рукава (work with sleeves down = work carelessly)
- Domestic life: выносить сор из избы (carry rubbish out of the hut = air dirty laundry)
- Food idioms: вешать лапшу на уши (hang noodles on ears = bluff/deceive)
Origins
- Бить баклуши comes from the old craft of making wooden spoons — splitting logs into rough blanks (баклуши) was considered the easiest, laziest task.
- Выносить сор из избы reflects the old Russian custom that family problems must stay within the household walls.

Most idioms are colloquial (разговорный). Using them in formal written texts is a stylistic error. In academic or official writing, use neutral equivalents.
