Scientific Discoveries: Perfect Passive Participles in Context
Russian science writing extensively uses perfective passive participles — both short and long forms — to describe what has been discovered, proven, or established.
Long-form Perfective Passive Participles (Attributive)
Used before or after nouns to describe what was done:
- обнаруженный — discovered / detected
- доказанный — proven
- опубликованный — published
- установленный — established / determined
Examples:
- Вновь обнаруженный вид — the newly discovered species
- Опубликованные данные подтверждают теорию. — The published data confirms the theory.
Short-form (Predicative) — Used after the noun
- Гипотеза была подтверждена. — The hypothesis was confirmed.
- Результаты опубликованы в журнале. — The results have been published in the journal.
- Эксперимент был проведён повторно. — The experiment was conducted again.
Reporting Scientific Claims
Use утверждать, что / свидетельствовать о том, что / показывать, что:
- Данные свидетельствуют о том, что... — The data indicates that...
- Исследование показывает, что... — The study shows that...
- Учёные утверждают, что... — Scientists claim that...
Key Aspect Note
In science, use perfective for completed studies and imperfective for ongoing research:
- Учёные изучают (impf) этот феномен. — Scientists are studying this phenomenon.
- Учёные изучили (pf) его за два года. — Scientists studied it over two years.

常见错误
Учёные сделали открытие.Учёные совершили открытие.In scientific contexts, совершить открытие (to make a discovery) is the fixed collocation, not сделать открытие. Similarly: совершить прорыв.
Гипотеза была доказана правильной.Гипотеза была подтверждена.Доказана правильной is a calque from English. Russian uses подтверждена (confirmed) or доказана (proven, alone without правильной).
Результаты исследования опубликовали в журнале.Результаты исследования были опубликованы в журнале.When there is no explicit subject who published (i.e. the action is generic/passive), use the passive: были опубликованы.
По данных исследования...По данным исследования...По in this meaning (according to) takes the dative: по данным (dative plural of данные). По данных is grammatically wrong.
Учёные исследовали вопрос на протяжение двух лет.Учёные исследовали вопрос на протяжении двух лет.На протяжении requires the genitive: протяжении is the prepositional/genitive form. На протяжение (accusative) is wrong.
Опыт был сделан в лаборатории.Эксперимент был проведён в лаборатории.In scientific Russian, эксперимент (experiment) is preferred over опыт (which can mean experience), and the verb is проводить / провести (to conduct), not делать / сделать.
