Future Medicine in Russian: Future Tense & Modals
Discussing the future of medicine requires confident use of Russian future tense constructions and modal verbs expressing possibility, probability, and necessity.
Future Tense Forms
Imperfective future (ongoing/repeated future action): быть + imperfective infinitive
- Врачи будут использовать ИИ. — Doctors will use AI.
- Учёные будут изучать эту болезнь. — Scientists will be studying this disease.
Perfective future (completed future action): conjugated perfective verb
- Врачи найдут лекарство. — Doctors will find a cure.
- Эта технология изменит медицину. — This technology will change medicine.
Modals for Probability & Possibility
- может (+ infinitive) — may / can
- должен / должна (+ infinitive) — must / should / is expected to
- способен / способна (+ infinitive) — is capable of
- вероятно — probably / it is likely
- возможно — possibly / it is possible
Examples:
- Генная терапия может полностью изменить лечение рака. — Gene therapy may completely change cancer treatment.
- Это открытие должно улучшить качество жизни пациентов. — This discovery should improve patients' quality of life.
- Вероятно, через 20 лет многие болезни будут побеждены. — It is likely that in 20 years many diseases will be conquered.
Expressing Optimism vs Caution
- Есть основания полагать, что... — There is reason to believe that...
- Пока неизвестно, удастся ли... — It is not yet known whether... will succeed.
- При условии дальнейших исследований... — Given further research...

常见错误
Учёные будут найти лечение.Учёные найдут лечение.Do not combine быть with a perfective infinitive. The imperfective future uses быть + imperfective infinitive (будут искать). For perfective future, use the conjugated perfective verb alone: найдут.
Это лекарство может лечить рак в будущем.Это лекарство может вылечить рак.When expressing the potential for a completed outcome, use the perfective infinitive вылечить (to cure, completely). Лечить (imperfective) implies an ongoing process.
Медицина будущего будет основываться в технологиях.Медицина будущего будет основываться на технологиях.Основываться (to be based on) governs на + prepositional case, not в. Медицина будет основываться на технологиях.
Клинические испытания были сделаны успешно.Клинические испытания прошли успешно.Клинические испытания are conducted or pass (проходить / пройти). Делать is too generic; пройти успешно (to go / pass successfully) is the standard expression.
Благодаря генетики, болезни будут побеждены.Благодаря генетике, болезни будут побеждены.Благодаря governs the dative case: генетике (dative of генетика), not the genitive генетики.
Вероятно, в будущем раковые болезни будут излечены полностью.Вероятно, в будущем онкологические заболевания будут полностью побеждены.The formal/medical term for cancer-related conditions is онкологические заболевания, not раковые болезни (though not wrong, it's informal). Also, побеждены (conquered) is more idiomatic than излечены (cured) for diseases broadly.
