Writing a business report in Russian
Russian business reports follow a formal structure and use an impersonal, passive style that differs markedly from conversational Russian.
Formal impersonal constructions
Business writing avoids first-person singular. Use these impersonal forms:
- В ходе анализа было установлено, что... — In the course of the analysis it was established that...
- Следует отметить, что... — It should be noted that...
- Представленные данные свидетельствуют о том, что... — The presented data indicate that...
- На основании вышеизложенного можно сделать вывод... — Based on the above, it can be concluded that...
Passive participles in reports
Past passive participles are essential for describing completed work:
- проведённый анализ — the conducted analysis
- полученные результаты — the obtained results
- предложенные меры — the proposed measures
- выявленные проблемы — the identified problems
Structuring with connectives
- во-первых... во-вторых... в-третьих... — firstly... secondly... thirdly...
- в связи с этим — in connection with this
- таким образом — thus / in this way
- что касается... — as for... / regarding...
Tip: In Russian formal writing, avoid contractions, slang, and first-person singular. The passive voice and impersonal constructions (безличные предложения) mark a professional tone.

常见错误
Согласно данных, прибыль выросла.Согласно данным, прибыль выросла.Согласно (according to) requires the dative case: данным, not the genitive данных.
Отчёт состоит из пяти глав.Отчёт состоит из пяти разделов / частей.Глава (chapter) is used for book chapters. In business reports, use раздел (section) or часть (part).
Я провёл анализ данных и нашёл проблемы.В ходе анализа данных были выявлены проблемы.Formal business writing avoids first-person singular. Use passive impersonal constructions instead.
По результату исследования следует...По результатам исследования следует...The plural результаты (results) is standard in formal reports: по результатам.
Отчёт был написан мной в прошлом месяце.Отчёт был подготовлен в прошлом месяце.In formal reports, avoid identifying the author with мной. Use подготовлен (prepared) without an agent.
Необходимо сделать следующие выводы.На основании изложенного можно сделать следующие выводы.In reports, conclusions are drawn from evidence. Use на основании + что was presented to properly ground your conclusion.
