Visa Procedures in Russian: Formal Conditional Constructions
Administrative language for visa applications uses formal conditional structures and impersonal constructions. At B2 level you need to understand bureaucratic requirements and express conditions formally.
Formal Conditional: При условии, что / При наличии
- при условии, что — on the condition that / provided that
- при наличии (+ genitive) — in the presence of / provided there is
- в случае отсутствия — in the absence of / if there is no
Examples:
- Виза выдаётся при наличии всех необходимых документов. — A visa is issued provided all required documents are present.
- Продление возможно при условии, что срок действия ещё не истёк. — Extension is possible on the condition that the validity period has not yet expired.
Impersonal Administrative Constructions
- необходимо + infinitive — it is necessary to
- требуется + infinitive — it is required to
- запрещается + infinitive — it is prohibited to
- разрешается + infinitive — it is permitted to
Examples:
- Необходимо предоставить нотариально заверенный перевод. — It is necessary to provide a notarized translation.
- Запрещается превышать срок действия визы. — It is prohibited to exceed the visa validity period.

常见错误
Для получить визу нужно...Для получения визы нужно...После для use the genitive of a noun, not an infinitive: для получения (genitive of получение). Для + infinitive is non-standard in formal Russian.
При наличие всех документов...При наличии всех документов...При наличии requires the prepositional/genitive case: наличии (prepositional of наличие). При наличие (accusative) is wrong.
Срок действие визы — 90 дней.Срок действия визы — 90 дней.Срок действия is a fixed phrase where действия is genitive (from действие). The genitive ending for neuter nouns in -ие is -ия: действия.
Нужно зарегистрировать до 7 дней.Нужно зарегистрироваться в течение 7 дней.The reflexive verb зарегистрироваться (to register oneself) is needed. Also, in течение + genitive is the correct temporal construction, not до for duration.
Виза была отказана.В визе было отказано. / В выдаче визы было отказано.Отказать is used in the construction отказать в чём-то (deny something). The passive is: в визе было отказано. The visa itself cannot be 'refused' — the applicant is denied the visa.
Документы должны быть нотариально заверенные до подачи.Документы должны быть нотариально заверены до подачи.In predicative position (after быть), use the short-form participle заверены, not the long-form заверенные. Long-form participles are used as attributes before nouns (e.g., заверенные документы).
