Legal Language: Reading Contracts in Russian
Russian legal language uses formal registers, specific passive constructions, and official vocabulary. At B2 level you need to read and discuss contracts confidently.
Formal Passive Constructions
Legal texts heavily use short-form passive participles:
- предусмотрено — is stipulated / is provided for
- установлено — is established
- указано — is indicated / stated
- определено — is defined
- запрещено — is prohibited
Examples:
- Штраф предусмотрен пунктом 5. — A penalty is stipulated in clause 5.
- Срок указан в приложении. — The deadline is stated in the annex.
Formal Connectors in Legal Texts
- в соответствии с — in accordance with
- согласно (+ dative) — according to / pursuant to
- при условии, что — provided that
- в случае (+ genitive) — in the event of
- на основании (+ genitive) — on the basis of
Examples:
- Согласно пункту 3, оплата производится ежемесячно. — According to clause 3, payment is made monthly.
- В случае нарушения договора стороны несут ответственность. — In the event of a breach, the parties are liable.
Obligations and Permissions
- обязан / обязана + infinitive — is obliged to
- вправе + infinitive — has the right to
- не вправе — is not entitled to
- несёт ответственность за — bears responsibility for

常见错误
Согласно к договору...Согласно договору... / В соответствии с договором...Согласно takes the dative case directly — no preposition к is needed. Согласно договору (dative).
Договор подписан от обеих сторон.Договор подписан обеими сторонами.In Russian passive constructions, the agent uses the instrumental case without a preposition: подписан обеими сторонами (instrumental).
Компания обязана платить штраф за нарушение.Компания обязана уплатить штраф за нарушение.In legal language, уплатить (perfective) is the standard verb for paying fines/fees, not платить (imperfective). The perfective signals a single, completed act.
Договор вступает в сила с...Договор вступает в силу с...The fixed phrase is вступать в силу — силу is accusative (feminine noun сила). Сила becomes силу in accusative.
При нарушение договора...При нарушении договора...При requires the prepositional case: при нарушении (prepositional), not при нарушение (accusative).
Стороны несут ответственность о качестве.Стороны несут ответственность за качество.Нести ответственность governs за + accusative, not о + prepositional.
