Persuasion in Russian requires mastering conditional structures and participial constructions that add force and elegance to arguments.
Mixed conditionals in Russian
Russian conditionals use бы (particle) with past tense for unreal situations:
- Если бы + past tense, ... бы + past tense — unreal condition: Если бы я знал об этом раньше, я бы принял другое решение.
- Если бы + past tense, ... бы + infinitive — mixed: Если бы он учился усерднее, он бы сейчас работал в лучшей компании.
Persuasion structures
- Согласитесь, что... — You would agree that... (draws agreement)
- Очевидно, что... — It is obvious that...
- Нельзя отрицать, что... — One cannot deny that...
- Как известно,... — As is known,...
Participles in argumentation
Active present participles (-ущий/-ящий) and active past participles (-вший) add formality:
- Данные, подтверждающие эту теорию,... — Data confirming this theory...
- Учёные, изучавшие вопрос,... — Scientists who had studied the question...

- Если бы я знал раньше,...To express a regret-based argument
- Согласитесь, что...To draw the listener into agreement
- Нельзя отрицать, что...To present an undeniable fact
- Как известно,...To invoke shared knowledge as support
- Всё говорит о том, что...To summarize evidence pointing to conclusion
- Стоит отметить, что...To highlight a key supporting point
- Именно поэтому...To stress a causal link in the argument
- С другой стороны,...To acknowledge a counterargument fairly
常见错误
Если бы я знаю об этом,...Если бы я знал об этом,...After если бы, Russian requires the past tense, not the present tense.
Если бы он учился, он будет успешным.Если бы он учился, он был бы успешным.In unreal conditionals, both clauses need past tense + бы, not the future.
Согласитесь, что это правда, не правда ли?Согласитесь, что это правда.Согласитесь already invites agreement; adding не правда ли is redundant.
Нельзя не отрицать, что...Нельзя отрицать, что...Double negation changes the meaning. Нельзя отрицать means one cannot deny.
Учёные, которые изучавшие вопрос,...Учёные, изучавшие вопрос,...A participial clause replaces a relative clause. Do not use который together with a participle.
Данные, подтверждающий теорию,...Данные, подтверждающие теорию,...The participial adjective must agree in number and case with its noun. Данные is plural, so -ие ending.
