Nuancing your speech in Russian
At B2 level, simply saying "я думаю" (I think) or "я не согласен" (I disagree) is not enough. Advanced Russian uses sophisticated connectors and concessive constructions to express shades of meaning.
Concessive connectors
- Хотя / Несмотря на то что — introduce a concession: Хотя результаты были обнадёживающими, нужны дополнительные исследования.
- Несмотря на + noun — despite + noun: Несмотря на усталость, она сделала отличный доклад.
- Тем не менее — nevertheless, at the start or middle of a sentence: Данные неполные; тем не менее можно сделать некоторые выводы.
- Вместе с тем — at the same time, combining two contrasting ideas: Это интересно; вместе с тем вызывает вопросы.
Moderating adverbs and particles
- Зато — but on the other hand (compensating contrast): Он плохо говорит по-английски, зато отлично по-русски.
- Однако — however, more formal than "но": Однако это не означает, что проблема решена.
- Всё же / Всё-таки — still / yet (persistence despite obstacle): Она всё же решила поехать.
Qualifying and specifying
To avoid overly absolute statements:
- В какой-то мере... — To some extent...
- Можно сказать, что... — One could say that...
- Это не значит, что... — This does not mean that...

- Хотя это правда, что...To concede a point before contrasting
- Несмотря на это,...To continue despite an obstacle
- Тем не менее,...To add a nuance after a statement
- Вместе с тем,...To add a contrasting idea simultaneously
- Зато...To compensate with a positive contrast
- В какой-то мере...To partially agree or qualify
- Это не значит, что...To prevent a wrong conclusion
- Можно сказать, что...To soften a claim diplomatically
常见错误
Несмотря на он устал, он продолжил.Несмотря на усталость, он продолжил.Несмотря на requires a noun or noun phrase, never a full clause with subject.
Хотя дождя, мы вышли.Несмотря на дождь, мы вышли.Хотя introduces a full clause; Несмотря на is followed by a noun in the accusative.
Тем не менее, но доклад был отличным.Тем не менее, доклад был отличным.Тем не менее is already a contrasting connector; do not add но as well.
Зато что он устал, он работал хорошо.Хотя он устал, он работал хорошо.Зато is a particle meaning but on the other hand, not a conjunction to introduce clauses.
Однако, но я не согласен.Однако я не согласен.Однако already means however; combining it with но is redundant.
Всё же, но она поехала.Всё же она поехала.Всё же means still/yet and does not combine with но.
