Advanced Nominalization
Nominalization transforms actions into abstract concepts, raising the register:
- Implementar o projeto → A implementação do projeto (The implementation of the project)
- Os alunos participaram → A participação dos alunos (The students' participation)
Academic Hedging
Hedging softens claims, showing scholarly caution:
- Parece indicar que (It seems to indicate that)
- Os resultados tendem a sugerir (The results tend to suggest)
- Poder-se-á inferir que (One may infer that)
- Afigura-se plausível que (It appears plausible that)
Metadiscursive Markers
These guide the reader through the text structure:
- Framing: No que concerne (regarding), no âmbito de (within the scope of)
- Sequencing: Em primeiro lugar (firstly), seguidamente (next), por fim (finally)
- Reformulating: Isto é (that is), ou seja (in other words), por outras palavras (in other words)
- Concluding: Face ao exposto (in light of the above), em suma (in summary)
Register Consistency
Academic Portuguese must maintain a consistently formal register throughout. Mixing informal expressions with academic language undermines credibility.
Tip: Read Portuguese academic journals (e.g., from Repositório Científico de Acesso Aberto de Portugal) to internalize the register.
