The Formal Letter
Portuguese formal letters follow strict conventions for structure and tone:
Opening greetings:
- Exmo. Senhor / Exma. Senhora (Dear Sir / Dear Madam) - most formal
- Caro(a) Senhor(a) (Dear Sir/Madam) - slightly less formal
- Vossa Excelência (Your Excellency) - for authorities
Opening the body:
- Venho por este meio solicitar... (I hereby request...)
- Dirijo-me a V. Exa. para... (I address Your Excellency to...)
- Serve a presente para informar que... (This letter serves to inform that...)
Closing formulas:
- Sem mais de momento, subscrevo-me com elevada consideração. (Without further ado, I subscribe with high regard.)
- Aguardando a sua resposta, apresento os meus melhores cumprimentos. (Awaiting your reply, I present my best regards.)
The formal register requires consistent use of the third person (V. Exa.) and avoidance of contractions or colloquialisms.

常见错误
Exmo. Sr. Director...Exmo. Senhor Diretor...Write 'Senhor' in full in formal letters. 'Diretor' has no 'c' in the new orthographic agreement.
Venho por este meio a solicitar...Venho por este meio solicitar...No preposition 'a' between 'meio' and the infinitive in this fixed expression.
