Business Ethics in Portuguese
Business ethics is an increasingly important topic in Portugal. Companies must adhere to códigos de conduta (codes of conduct) and ensure transparência (transparency).
Expressing Moral Obligation
- As empresas devem respeitar os direitos dos trabalhadores. — Companies must respect workers' rights.
- É imperativo que haja transparência. — It is imperative that there be transparency.
- Não se pode tolerar a corrupção. — Corruption cannot be tolerated.
The Passive with "Se" for General Rules
Use the passive se construction for impersonal rules:
- Não se aceita o suborno nesta empresa. — Bribery is not accepted in this company.
- Devem-se cumprir as normas éticas. — Ethical standards must be followed.
Discussing Corporate Social Responsibility
- A empresa tem responsabilidade social. — The company has social responsibility.
- Investimos em práticas sustentáveis. — We invest in sustainable practices.
- A governança corporativa é essencial. — Corporate governance is essential.
Reporting Misconduct
- É necessário denunciar irregularidades. — It is necessary to report irregularities.
- O trabalhador apresentou queixa por discriminação. — The worker filed a complaint for discrimination.

É imperativo que há transparência.É imperativo que haja transparência.'É imperativo que' requires the subjunctive: 'haja', not the indicative 'há'.
Não aceita-se o suborno.Não se aceita o suborno.'Não' triggers proclisis — the pronoun must come before the verb: 'não se aceita'.
A empresa deve de respeitar as normas.A empresa deve respeitar as normas.'Dever' + infinitive needs no preposition. Use 'deve respeitar', not 'deve de respeitar'.
Ele apresentou queixa pela discriminação.Ele apresentou queixa por discriminação.Use 'por' (general reason), not 'pela' (specific), in 'apresentar queixa por' + abstract noun.
Deve-se cumprir as normas.Devem-se cumprir as normas.The verb agrees with 'normas' (plural): 'devem-se cumprir', not 'deve-se'.
