Reporting Issues
Use estar + a + infinitive for ongoing problems:
- O computador está a ficar lento. (The computer is getting slow.)
- O ecrã está a piscar. (The screen is flickering.)
Use the pretérito perfeito for sudden events:
- O telemóvel avariou. (The phone broke down.)
- A bateria acabou. (The battery died.)
Asking for Help
- Pode ajudar-me com...? (Can you help me with...?)
- Não consigo ligar o computador. (I cannot turn on the computer.)
- O que é que devo fazer? (What should I do?)
European Portuguese Tech Vocabulary
Key differences from Brazilian Portuguese:
- ecrã (not tela) — screen
- telemóvel (not celular) — mobile phone
- computador portátil (not notebook) — laptop
- rato (not mouse) — mouse
Note: Avaria is the European term for a technical fault/breakdown.
