Formal vs. Informal Polish

词汇

  • zwrot grzecznosciowypolite form of address
  • forma pan/paniMr./Ms. form
  • styl oficjalnyofficial style
  • jezyk codziennyeveryday language
  • ton neutralnyneutral tone

In Polish, register is deeply tied to the pan/pani (Mr./Ms.) system. When speaking formally, you address someone as pan (male) or pani (female) in the third person: Czy pan mowi po angielsku? (Do you speak English?). Informal address uses the second person ty: Czy mowisz po angielsku?. Choosing the wrong register is a significant social faux pas in Polish culture. Formal language is required in professional settings, official documents, and when addressing strangers or elders. Literary Polish elevates further with archaic forms and complex sentence structures.

  • Szanowny Panie DyrektorzeDear Director (formal salutation)
  • Uprzejmie prosze oI kindly request (official request)

  • Mam zaszczytI have the honor of (elevated formal)

  • Hej, co slychac?
Dzien dobry, co u Pana slychac?

Too casual for a formal first meeting; use pan/pani

  • Chce zamowic kawe
    Prosze o kawe

Direct demand sounds rude; use prosze for polite requests

  • Pan Kowalski mowi
Pan Kowalski mowi / Kowalski mowi

Pan must always be followed by the last name in formal use
