Formal Debate Language in Polish
Polish formal debate (debata formalna) follows strict conventions of register and structure.
Key debate moves:
- Opening your position: W imieniu strony popierającej/przeciwnej chciałbym przedstawić... (On behalf of the proposing/opposing side, I would like to present...)
- Agreeing with a premise while rebutting: Owszem, przyznajemy, że X. Jednakże kluczowe jest...
- Challenging the evidence: Pozwoli Pan/Pani, że zakwestionuję to twierdzenie. Według... (Allow me to challenge this claim. According to...)
- Requesting clarification: Proszę o sprecyzowanie, czy chodzi o... (I request clarification: does this concern...)
- Summarizing your position: Reasumując naszą argumentację...
Formal address in debate:
- Use Pan/Pani (Mr./Ms.) for opponents
- Szanowna strona przeciwna (the honoured opposing side)
- Never use ty (informal you) even when disagreeing sharply
