Logical Fallacies in Polish
A logical fallacy (błąd logiczny) is an error in reasoning that undermines the logical validity of an argument.
Common fallacies:
- Ad hominem — attacking the person instead of the argument: Nie możesz mówić o ekonomii, bo nie skończyłeś studiów.
- Słomiana kukła (straw man) — misrepresenting someone's argument: Mówisz, że chcesz oszczędzać, więc nie zależy ci na rodzinie.
- Fałszywy dylemat (false dilemma) — presenting only two options when more exist: Albo popierasz tę ustawę, albo jesteś przeciw narodowi.
- Generalizacja — overgeneralizing from limited examples: Ten polityk skłamał raz, więc wszyscy politycy kłamią.
Recognizing fallacies in Polish discourse:
Fallacies often appear in political speeches, debates, and persuasive writing.
- Look for attacks on the speaker's character rather than their argument
- Watch for false binary choices
- Notice when conclusions don't follow from the premises (non sequitur)
