Polysemy and Ambiguity in Polish
Many Polish words have multiple meanings that require context to disambiguate.
Examples of polysemic words:
- zamek = castle OR lock (on a door/bag) OR zip (fastener)
- kot = cat OR (colloquial) a cool person
- pilny = urgent OR diligent/hardworking
- trzymać = to hold / to keep / to keep to (a rule)
Sources of ambiguity in Polish:
- Homonyms: para (couple / steam / pair)
- Polysemy: głowa (head of body / head of state / intelligence)
- Grammatical ambiguity: Widziałem go z kimś — I saw him with someone, or someone saw him?
How to disambiguate at C1:
- Use dosłownie (literally) or w przenośni (figuratively) as markers
- Add context: zamek drzwiowy (door lock), zamek błyskawiczny (zip/zipper)
- Rephrase: if pilny is ambiguous, say naglący (urgent) or pracowity (hardworking)

常见错误
Zamek był bardzo duży.Zamek (tu: twierdza) był ogromny i imponujący.Without specifying which meaning of zamek, the sentence is ambiguous; in formal writing, always add context when a polysemic word could be misunderstood
On jest pilny — nie może teraz rozmawiać.On jest zajęty pilną sprawą — nie może teraz rozmawiać.Pilny alone is ambiguous (urgent vs. hardworking); clarify with pilną sprawą (an urgent matter) to specify the intended meaning
Widziałem go z siostrą na ulicy.Widziałem go idącego z siostrą, gdy szedłem ulicą.Widziałem go z siostrą is structurally ambiguous (who was with the sister?); a subordinate clause removes the ambiguity
