The 시조 (sijo) is Korea's classical verse form, structured in three lines with a rhythmic pattern of roughly 3-4-3-4 syllable groupings per half-line. The final line always begins with a 3-syllable twist (장 — the "turn"), followed by 5-4 syllables. This compressed structure demands extreme precision: every syllable bears weight. Classical sijo themes center on nature, Confucian loyalty, love, and impermanence — all filtered through the emotion of 한 (collective sorrow). Korean poetry excels at 여백 (negative space) — what is NOT said matters as much as what is. Contemporary Korean poets like 김혜순 push sijo and free verse into experimental territory. When writing Korean poetry at C2 level, your imagery must draw from Korean cultural symbols: the pine tree (절개/loyalty), the moon (longing), the magpie (fortune), autumn (melancholy). The goal is not translation of foreign poetic ideas, but authentic expression rooted in Korean aesthetic sensibility.

常见错误
봄이 와서 꽃이 피어나고 있다봄이 오니 꽃이 피어난다In Korean poetry, '오니' (causal connective) creates more lyrical flow than '와서'. Poetry favors concise connectives over explanatory ones.
산이 높고 크다산은 높고 크다Topic marker '은/는' creates a meditative, defining quality that '이/가' lacks. '산은' sets the mountain as a subject of contemplation.
바람 소리를 들었다바람 소리 들린다The passive '들린다' (is heard) expresses the speaker being enveloped by sound — a key Korean poetic technique — whereas '들었다' is merely transactional.
슬픔이 많이 느껴진다슬픔이 밀려온다'밀려온다' (washes over) is evocative and imagistic; '많이 느껴진다' is analytical. C2 poetry should use concrete, sensory verbs rather than abstract degree adverbs.
고향을 생각하면서 시를 썼다고향을 그리며 시를 쓴다'그리며' conveys the Korean concept of yearning (그리움) concisely. '생각하면서' is prosaic. Present tense '쓴다' gives poetry an eternal, timeless quality.
