Tone and voice in Korean writing
Korean writing operates on a spectrum from highly formal (격식체) to casual (반말). Mastering tone means choosing vocabulary, endings, and structures that match your purpose and audience.
Register spectrum:
- 합쇼체 (-ㅂ니다): formal — reports, official documents, speeches.
- 해요체 (-아/어요): polite — emails, articles, presentations.
- 해체 (-아/어): casual — among friends, social media.
Adapting 어조 (tone):
- Neutral/objective: Avoid emotional adjectives; use data and evidence.
- Empathetic: Use hedging (모르겠지만...) and acknowledgement (물론...).
- Authoritative: Use declarative forms (-다, -이다) without qualifiers.
분위기 (atmosphere/mood): Word choice creates atmosphere. Compare:
- 우려됩니다 (it is concerning) — formal concern.
- 걱정이에요 (I am worried) — personal and warm.
Key principle: Know your reader. Academic writing and personal essays demand different tones, even in the same language.
