Visa Procedures in Korean
Navigating visa applications in Korea requires mastery of formal obligation and procedural passive structures.
Key grammar points:
- -하여야 한다 — Required steps that must be completed.
- 신청서를 영사관에 제출하여야 한다. (The application must be submitted to the consulate.)
- -(으)ㄹ 필요가 있다 — Useful for recommending preparation steps.
- 모든 서류를 미리 준비할 필요가 있다. (There is a need to prepare all documents in advance.)
- -되었다 — Passive perfect indicating an outcome.
- 비자 신청이 승인되었다. (The visa application has been approved.)
- 비자 신청이 거절되었다. (The visa application has been rejected.)
- -다고/라고 (indirect speech) — Reporting embassy instructions or policy.
- 대사관에서는 3개월 이상 체류할 경우 비자가 필요하다고 안내하고 있다. (The embassy advises that a visa is required for stays of more than 3 months.)
Practical note: Always use formal language when communicating with immigration authorities. -하여야 한다 is the register expected in official correspondence.

비자 신청서가 제출하여야 한다비자 신청서를 제출하여야 한다신청서 is the object of 제출하다, so it needs the object marker 를, not the subject marker 가.
출입국 관리소에서 문의할 필요가 있다출입국 관리소에 문의할 필요가 있다문의하다 marks the target of the inquiry with 에 (direction), not 에서, which marks where an action happens.
비자 신청이 승인했다비자 신청이 승인되었다The application gets approved, so it is passive: 승인되다 (승인되었다), not the active 승인하다.
비자가 필요한다고 안내했다비자가 필요하다고 안내했다필요하다 is an adjective. Indirect speech with adjectives ends in -다고: 필요하다고, never 필요한다고.
서류를 준비하지 않아서 비자가 거절될 수 있다서류를 준비하지 않으면 비자가 거절될 수 있다For a condition (if ...) use -(으)면, not causal -아서/어서, which states an actual reason, not a hypothetical.
