Improvising in Japanese
Improvising effectively in Japanese conversations requires mastering connectors that buy you time while maintaining coherence.
~と申しますのは (to moushimasu no wa) is a formal way of saying "the reason I say this is." It allows you to elaborate or justify a previous statement, which is invaluable when improvising.
変更が必要と申しますのは、現状では対応が難しいからです。
The reason I say changes are necessary is that the current situation is difficult to handle.
つまり and すなわち both mean "in other words" but differ in register. つまり is versatile and common in both speech and writing, while すなわち is more formal and literary.
つまり、計画の見直しが必要です。
In other words, we need to review the plan.
When improvising, use と申しますのは to elaborate, つまり to rephrase, and 言い換えれば to offer alternatives. If you digress (脱線する), use 話を戻しますが to get back on track. These tools help you maintain a polished delivery even when speaking off the cuff.
