Making Requests and Expressing Feelings
Non-violent communication in Japanese relies on specific grammar patterns that soften requests and center the speaker's feelings rather than blaming others.
てほしい expresses wanting someone to do something: もっと話を聞いてほしい (I want you to listen to me more). It is direct but personal, focusing on your own desire.
ていただけませんか is a very polite request form: 少し時間をいただけませんか (Could you give me a little time?). This humble form shows great respect and is ideal for sensitive conversations.
ようにお願いする is used for formal or indirect requests: 静かにするようにお願いします (I would like to ask you to be quiet). It softens the request by framing it as a wish.
という気持ち allows you to name and own your feelings: 寂しいという気持ちを伝えたい (I want to express the feeling of loneliness). This pattern is central to NVC — it separates observation from emotion.
Using these patterns together enables compassionate, non-judgmental communication in Japanese.
