Debating Politely in Japanese
Japanese culture values harmony, so polite debate requires careful language. Key B1 patterns:
〜のに (despite / although)
Expresses surprise or frustration that something is contrary to expectation.
- 練習(れんしゅう)したのに、上手(じょうず)にできなかった。 (Although I practiced, I couldn't do it well.)
〜かもしれません (might / perhaps)
Softens a statement, making it less assertive.
- それは正(ただ)しいかもしれません。 (That might be correct.)
〜と言(い)われています (It is said that)
Reports commonly held beliefs without taking personal responsibility.
- 日本(にほん)では残業(ざんぎょう)が多(おお)いと言われています。 (It is said that in Japan there is a lot of overtime.)
Softening Techniques
In polite debate, always soften your disagreement:
- 確かにそうですが... (That's true, but...)
- おっしゃる通(とお)りですが... (What you say is right, but...)

- おっしゃる通(とお)りですPolitely agree with what someone said
- 確(たし)かにそうですが…Acknowledge then introduce a counter-point
- 〜かもしれませんがSoften disagreement with maybe but...
- それは一理(いちり)ありますAdmit the other person has a valid point
- 〜と言(い)われていますがCite common belief before challenging it
- 失礼(しつれい)ですがPreface a potentially rude statement
常见错误
練習したのに、できないだった。練習したのに、できなかった。The negative past of できる is できなかった, not できないだった.
それは正しいかもしれないです。それは正しいかもしれません。かもしれません is the standard polite form. かもしれないです sounds unnatural.
残業が多いを言われています。残業が多いと言われています。The quotation particle is と (not を) when reporting what is said.
彼は来るのに、まだ来ていません。彼は来ると言ったのに、まだ来ていません。のに needs a complete factual clause. Add と言った to indicate what was promised.
おっしゃるとおりですけど、私は反対と思います。おっしゃる通りですが、私は反対だと思います。Two errors: use が (not けど) in formal debate, and 反対 needs だと思います.
