This lesson covers three patterns for making group decisions, giving advice, and stating purposes — essential for housemate communication.

Proposes a group decision.

Gives strong advice or states what is morally or logically right.

Expresses purpose or goal.

問題(もんだい)が起(お)きないように、ルールを決(き)めましょう。 (Let's set rules so that problems don't arise.)
みんなが快適(かいてき)に暮(く)らせるように、協力(きょうりょく)しましょう。 (Let's cooperate so everyone can live comfortably.)

家事(かじ)を公平(こうへい)に分担(ぶんたん)することにしましょう。Let us decide to divide housework fairly.
お互(たが)いのルールを守(まも)るべきです。We should follow each other's rules.
みんなが快適(かいてき)に過(す)ごせるように、妥協(だきょう)しましょう。Let us compromise so everyone can be comfortable.
掃除(そうじ)の当番(とうばん)を決(き)めることにしました。We decided to set up a cleaning rotation.
共有(きょうゆう)スペースは使(つか)ったら片付(かたづ)けるべきです。Clean up shared spaces after using them.
洗濯(せんたく)は各自(かくじ)でするように決(き)めました。We decided that everyone does their own laundry.

~~家事を分担するべきにしましょう。~~
家事(かじ)を分担(ぶんたん)することにしましょう。
Do not mix べき and ことにする. Use ことにしましょう for group decisions, and べきです for advice. They serve different functions.
~~ルールを守るべきだ。~~
ルールを守(まも)るべきです。
When discussing rules with housemates, use the polite form べきです rather than the blunt べきだ, which sounds preachy.
~~問題が起きるないように。~~
問題(もんだい)が起(お)きないように。
ように follows the plain negative form: 起きない (not 起きるない). Remove the extra る.
~~掃除の当番を決めるようにしました。~~
掃除(そうじ)の当番(とうばん)を決(き)めることにしました。
ことにする means to decide to. ようにする means to try to / make an effort to. For a concrete decision, use ことにする.
~~みんな快適に暮らすように協力しましょう。~~
みんなが快適(かいてき)に暮(く)らせるように、協力(きょうりょく)しましょう。
Use the potential form 暮らせる (can live) after みんなが. Also add が to mark the subject in the ように clause.
