Talking About Your Job
In Japanese, there are several ways to describe what you do for work.
Pattern 1: ...をしています
Use this to describe your occupation:
- 会社員をしています。(I am an office worker.)
- 先生をしています。(I am a teacher.)
Pattern 2: ...で働いています
Use this to say where you work:
- 病院で働いています。(I work at a hospital.)
- 東京の会社で働いています。(I work at a company in Tokyo.)
Pattern 3: ...です
The simplest way, using です:
- 私はエンジニアです。(I am an engineer.)
Asking about jobs
- お仕事は何ですか？(What is your job? — polite)
- 何をしていますか？(What do you do?)
- どこで働いていますか？(Where do you work?)
Duration with から
To say how long you have been working:
- 3年前から働いています。(I have been working since 3 years ago.)
- 去年からこの会社で働いています。(I have been working at this company since last year.)
Example: 私は看護師をしています。東京の大きい病院で働いています。(I am a nurse. I work at a large hospital in Tokyo.)

- お仕事は何ですか？Politely ask about someone's job
- 会社員をしています。Say you are an office worker
- 病院で働いています。Say where you work
- 毎日忙しいです。Say you are busy every day
- 仕事が好きです。Say you like your job
- 何年働いていますか？Ask how long someone has worked
