えん (en) — The Yen Counter
Japanese currency is counted with えん directly after the number:
💬 Example: "さんびゃくえん です" → "It's 300 yen"
Key amounts:
- ひゃくえん → 100 yen
- にひゃくえん → 200 yen
- ごひゃくえん → 500 yen
- せんえん → 1,000 yen
- にせんえん → 2,000 yen
Note: Some numbers change pronunciation before ひゃく: さんびゃく (300), ろっぴゃく (600), はっぴゃく (800).
いくらですか (ikura desu ka) — How Much?
This is THE essential shopping phrase:
💬 Example: "これは いくらですか？" → "How much is this?"
Paying
- げんきんで おねがいします → Cash, please
- カードで おねがいします → By card, please
The particle で indicates the method of payment.

さんひゃくえんさんびゃくえん300 yen is さんびゃく (b-sound), not さんひゃく
ろくひゃくえんろっぴゃくえん600 yen is ろっぴゃく (p-sound), not ろくひゃく
いくら です このこれは いくらですかUse これは (this + topic marker) at the start, with か at the end
えん ごひゃくごひゃくえんThe counter えん comes AFTER the number, not before
おかね くださいおつりを くださいおかね means money in general — for change use おつり
