Key Concession Patterns
- Ciò nonostante, ... (Nevertheless) — formal
- Pur ammettendo che + subj. (Even admitting that...) — very formal
- Sebbene + subj., ... (Although...) — formal
- Per quanto + subj., ... (However much...) — formal
- Nonostante + noun/subj. (Despite / Although...) — formal
How to Use Them
Ciò nonostante connects two opposing ideas:
- I dati presentano limiti evidenti. Ciò nonostante, la tendenza generale è chiara.
Pur ammettendo che introduces a concession with the gerund + subjunctive:
- Pur ammettendo che il campione sia ridotto, i risultati restano significativi.
Sebbene always requires the subjunctive:
- Sebbene i critici sostengano il contrario, l'evidenza è schiacciante.
The Concede-and-Counter Pattern
A strong academic argument often follows this structure: 1. Concede: Pur riconoscendo la validità di questa critica... 2. Counter: ...è tuttavia necessario sottolineare che... 3. Reinforce: ...il che conferma la nostra ipotesi iniziale.
Tip: Using concession structures makes your argument stronger, not weaker. Italian academia values onestà intellettuale — showing you have considered opposing views before reaching your conclusion.
