Citing Sources in Italian Academic Writing
Italian academic writing has well-established conventions for citing sources. Mastering phrases like Come X sostiene... and Secondo Y (anno)... is essential for scholarly credibility.

Direct vs. Indirect Citation
Direct citation (citazione diretta) — use quotation marks and page number:
- Eco (1977) afferma: "Il segno è qualcosa che sta per qualcos'altro" (p. 15).
Indirect citation (citazione indiretta) — paraphrase with subjunctive:
- Eco (1977) sostiene che il segno rappresenti qualcosa di diverso da sé.
Common Reporting Verbs
Italian academic writing uses a rich variety of reporting verbs:
- sostenere (to argue), affermare (to state), rilevare (to observe)
- ipotizzare (to hypothesize), dimostrare (to demonstrate), concludere (to conclude)
- evidenziare (to highlight), sottolineare (to underline), suggerire (to suggest)
Tip: In Italian academia, Secondo is more common than "Come" for introducing citations. The choice of reporting verb conveys your stance toward the source — sostiene is neutral, while pretende implies skepticism.
