The Passive Voice with the Present Perfect

At B2 level, the passive with the present perfect (passato prossimo) is formed with essere in the present perfect + a past participle that agrees in gender and number.

Formation

essere (present perfect) + past participle

Actif : Hanno scoperto un nuovo pianeta. → Passif : È stato scoperto un nuovo pianeta.
Actif : Hanno dimostrato la teoria. → Passif : La teoria è stata dimostrata.

Nuance: essere vs venire

essere + p.p. → resulting state or a completed past action
Il vaccino è stato approvato. — The vaccine has been approved.
venire + p.p. → ongoing or repeated action (present/imperfect only)
I risultati vengono verificati ogni anno. — The results are verified every year.

B2 tip: In Italian scientific texts, the passive voice is very common because it foregrounds the action rather than the agent — just as in academic English.

The past participle must agree with the subject: 'teoria' is feminine, so 'dimostrata'.
~~I risultati vengono stati pubblicati.~~
I risultati sono stati pubblicati.
'Venire' cannot be used in compound tenses. For the past passive, always use 'essere'.
~~L'ipotesi è stata formulata da i ricercatori.~~
L'ipotesi è stata formulata dai ricercatori.
'Da' + 'i' must contract to 'dai' in Italian.
~~Il brevetto ha stato depositato.~~
Il brevetto è stato depositato.
The passive is always formed with 'essere', never 'avere', even for transitive verbs.
~~Gli scienziati hanno scoperto una nuova cosa.~~
I ricercatori hanno individuato un nuovo fenomeno.
At B2, use precise vocabulary: ricercatori, individuare, fenomeno.
~~La ricerca ha provato che la teoria è giusta.~~
La ricerca ha dimostrato che la teoria è valida.
In scientific language, use dimostrare (not provare) and valida (not giusta).
