Present and past participles as adjectives

In B2 Italian, present participles (active form) and past participles (passive/resultative form) are widely used as adjectives to describe emotions and states.

Present participles (-ante / -ente)

Express an active quality: what produces the effect

  • commovente : émouvant / moving / bewegend
  • affascinante : fascinant
  • coinvolgente : captivant / entraînant
  • rilassante : relaxant
  • evocativo : évocateur (irrégulier)

Questa melodia è commovente. → This melody is moving. Un testo così coinvolgente è raro. → Such an engaging text is rare.

Past participles as adjectives

Express a resulting state: what the person feels

  • commosso/a : ému(e) / emocionado/a / bewegt
  • affascinato/a : fasciné(e) / fascinado/a
  • coinvolto/a : emporté(e) / einbezogen
  • ispirato/a : inspiré(e)
  • nostalgico/a : nostalgique (adjectif)

Sono rimasto commosso dall'armonia. → I was left moved by the harmony. Uscii dal concerto affascinata e coinvolta. → I left the concert fascinated and swept up.

Key rule

  • The present participle describes the source of the emotion (the music, the artist...).
  • The past participle describes the person feeling the emotion.

表达

  • questa canzone mi lascia senza paroleTo express the powerful effect of a song
  • il ritmo è travolgenteTo describe an overwhelming rhythm
  • la melodia rimane impressaTo say a melody stays in your head
  • sono rimasto colpito dall'armoniaTo express one's own emotional reaction
  • la musica trasmette un'emozione intensaTo describe the emotional power of music
  • è un brano che non passa mai di modaTo describe a timeless song
  • Mi viene la pelle d'ocaExpress intense emotion caused by music
  • Avere un nodo alla golaDescribe a strong emotion that prevents you from speaking

常见错误

  • Sono molto commovente dopo quel concerto.
Sono rimasto molto commosso dopo quel concerto.

'Commovente' describes the source of the emotion (not the person). To express the person's state, use 'commosso/a'.

  • Quella melodia mi ha affascinato molto.
Quella melodia è stata molto affascinante / mi ha affascinato molto.

Both forms are correct but serve different purposes: 'mi ha affascinato' (action) vs 'è affascinante' (permanent quality).

  • La musica è ispirata e io sono inspirato.
La musica è ispirata e io sono ispirato.

'Ispirato' in Italian has only one 'n'. Watch the spelling of this word borrowed from French/English.

  • Ero molto coinvolgente dal ritmo.
    Ero molto coinvolto dal ritmo.

'Coinvolgente' cannot be used with an agent complement ('dal ritmo'). To describe the person's state, use 'coinvolto/a'.

  • Questa canzone mi fa sentire buono.
Questa canzone mi fa sentire bene.

With sentire/sentirsi, use the adverb bene, not the adjective buono.

  • Ascolto la musica da quando sono piccolo.
Ascolto musica da quando ero piccolo.

With da quando referring to the past, use the imperfect (ero) and no article before musica.
