Emphasis and Focus in Hindi
Hindi achieves emphasis through several sophisticated mechanisms that C1 speakers must command fluently.
1. Focus Particles:
- ही (hi) — exclusive/restrictive: यही समस्या है (This is precisely the problem)
- भी (bhi) — inclusive: यह भी सच है (This too is true)
- तो (to) — topic/contrast: मैं तो चला जाऊँगा (I, for one, will leave)
- तक (tak) — scalar: बच्चों तक को पता था (Even children knew)
2. Word Order Manipulation: Hindi is SOV but allows fronting for emphasis:
- Neutral: राम ने किताब पढ़ी (Ram read the book)
- Emphatic: किताब राम ने पढ़ी (The book — Ram read it)
3. Repetition for Intensity:
- धीरे-धीरे (very slowly), बड़ा-बड़ा (very big), कभी-कभी (sometimes)
4. Pseudo-cleft constructions:
- जो चाहिए वह है अनुशासन (What is needed is discipline)
- जिसने यह किया वह राम था (It was Ram who did this)
5. Emphatic do-support equivalent:
- करता तो हूँ (I do indeed do it) — contrastive emphasis

मैं भी नहीं जाऊँगा (meaning: I will certainly not go)मैं तो नहीं जाऊँगाभी means also/even; तो carries the emphatic/contrastive meaning of for one's part or certainly
