Humour and Irony in Hindi
Hindi has a rich tradition of व्यंग्य (satire/irony), especially in literature and everyday speech. Understanding irony requires cultural knowledge.
Understatement (अल्पोक्ति): Hindi often uses understatement for comic effect:
- वह थोड़ा सा देर से आया — बस पाँच घंटे। (He came a little late — just five hours.)
Sarcasm with tone: The same sentence can be ironic or sincere depending on tone:
- वाह, क्या काम किया! (Wow, what work you did!) — sincere or deeply sarcastic
Common ironic structures:
- जैसे कि... (As if...)
- बड़े आए... (Who do you think you are... / lit. "big one came")
- बहुत अच्छा किया! (You did great! — often sarcastic)
Wordplay (श्लेष): Hindi puns exploit multiple meanings of words. Classical poets used श्लेष heavily. Example:
- कमल खिला है। (The lotus has bloomed / Kamal has blossomed — name + flower)
Famous satirist: Harishankar Parsai (हरिशंकर परसाई) mastered Hindi व्यंग्य — reading him is excellent B2 practice.

मैं व्यंग्य कर रहा हूँ।मैं मज़ाक में कह रहा हूँ। / यह व्यंग्य था।Announcing sarcasm kills it — in Hindi, let tone do the work. Explicit labelling is only used in writing
वह बहुत मज़ाकी है।वह बहुत मज़ाकिया है।The adjective for humorous is मज़ाकिया (not मज़ाकी)
उसने एक अच्छा पन बोला।उसने एक अच्छा शब्द-खेल किया।पन is not used in Hindi for wordplay; use शब्दों का खेल or श्लेष (literary)
वाह, तुमने क्या अच्छा काम किया है!वाह, क्या काम किया है!In sarcasm, over-specification weakens the impact — the shorter, more clipped form is more cutting
विडम्बना यह है कि...विडंबना यह है कि...Correct spelling is विडंबना (with anusvara ं, not म) — a common spelling error
