Metre, rhyme, and free verse in German
German poetry has a rich metrical tradition. Understanding its fundamentals is essential for C2-level analysis.
Rhyme schemes:
- Paarreim (aa bb): Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind? / Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind. (Goethe)
- Kreuzreim (abab): the most common scheme in German poetry.
Versmaß (metre):
- Jambus (iamb): da-DUM → Ich WEIß nicht WAS soll ES beDEUten (Heine)
- Trochäus (trochee): DUM-da → falling rhythm, solemn tone.
Enjambment:
- Und es wallet und siedet und brauset und zischt, / wie wenn Wasser mit Feuer sich mengt. (Schiller) — the sentence spills over to the next line.
Free verse (freie Verse):
- Rilke and Celan break metrical constraints. Rhythm comes from breath, not from pattern.
German poetry oscillates between formal rigour and expressive freedom.
